Gastonia Area Amateur Radio Club

Meeting minutes 2/8/2007

Schiele Museum

Paul began the meeting with a welcome to all followed by introductions Paul introduced 2 visitors in the audience. John and AJ Connolly

Paul thanked the Schiele Museum for their kindness, followed by the club financial report. The January minutes were read and agreed upon.

Paul then went on to talk about the amateur radio demonstration that was held at Grier Middle School. The presentation was put on for over 90 students and seemed to be enjoyed by all. Many of the students wanted to know and learn more about ham radio and there was the idea from the classes about possibly setting up a Technician class and/or perhaps a station at the school. Paul also read an email sent from the teacher, Ms Wincoff, letting the students and parents know about the club meeting and contact information if anyone wanted more information on ham radio.

There was also a small discussion from the membership about helping with a class if there was interest.

The topic of the swapfest was brought up and several different ideas, suggestions and comments were brought forth in the discussion. There are several areas that need more attention this year and we need to get an earlier start.  Hopefully in the next couple of months plans can be finalized.

Field Day was brought up and the Schiele Museum has approved the use of the parking lot for the set-up and facilities should be available.

The topic of repeater trustee was touched upon. Ken is in the process of taking over as trustee of the club call. This will allow more privileges on the bands for events such as Field Day or contesting.

Don’s presentation for the meeting was Digital Modes in Amateur Radio.

Everyone seemed to enjoy the information and displays of the many modes that are available.

After Don’s presentation, Paul mentioned that there was going to be a packet radio / APRS demonstration on Saturday February 17 at the Union Road Volunteer Fire Department. Everyone is invited to stop by and check it out.

Don talked about a 40 meter cw transceiver that he put together from a kit and passed it around for the audience to see. He also mentioned that he would like to hold a  kit building session for those interested and will bring more information.

In other business,

Ken brought up the suggestion of starting a net on the repeater and wanted to see if there was an interest. He would like to see more activity on the repeater and would like input from the members.

Dennis mentioned the next VE test session will be March 3rd, the 1st Saturday in March at the Masonic Lodge in Dallas. On Saturday February 17, GCARS will be have a foxhunt and the ARES trailer has been moved to the EOC. He is also looking for projects and input for the Glenn Foundation.

With no more business Paul reminded everyone of the next meeting on March 1st and adjourned the meeting.

Respectfully submitted by
